The bridge will be closed to motor vehicles, bicyclists and pedestrians from 8 p.m. on Friday until as late as 6 a.m. on Monday. Tri-Met bus routes 12, 19 and 20 will use the Morrison Bridge during the closure. The bridge will reopen before Monday if work is completed early.
The start of bridge work has been postponed twice this month due to inclement weather. The closure will allow a contractor to set up a work zone and new traffic pattern for the construction.
Traffic on the Burnside Bridge could choke over the next two years since the project will reduce the number of lanes from five to two. The project will also require several complete bridge closures during weekends.
“While the project will create inconvenience for bridge users, it will extend the life of the historic bridge. Replacing the Burnside Bridge would cost at least $170 million,” said Mike Pullen with the Multnomah County Public Affairs Office.
