SELLWOOD STILL SMARTS OVER STREETCAR BARN

Full Description:

Of Sellwood-Moreland's derelict 1914 streetcar barn, only one element remains standing: a 150-foot stretch of arched brick wall, painted dark red on its western exposure, reinforced with iron stays and lengths of timber.

For more than two years, residents of what used to be an independent town southeast of Portland fought to preserve the Southeast 13th Avenue trolley garage. Argued, lobbied, offered alternatives.

In the end, development won out, filling the barn's 2.8-acre plot with three-story townhouses chock-a-block with the fineries of luxe infill: stained cherry hardwood floors, dual master suites, gourmet kitchens, sunken living rooms, designer paint colors, soaring ceilings. Asking prices rise from $350,000.
